The Indian EV space just got a lot more interesting. A camouflaged test mule of the BYD Atto 2 has been caught on Indian roads, and the timing couldn’t be more telling. BYD, which has so far played in the premium end of the market with cars like the Atto 3, Seal, and the e6 MPV, now appears to be eyeing the high-volume, budget-friendly segment that Indian buyers actually shop in the most.
What Exactly Was Spotted?
The test mule was heavily wrapped in camouflage, but it couldn’t hide the SUV’s distinctive crossover stance. Sold internationally as the Yuan Up (China) and Yuan Pro (Brazil), the Atto 2 trades the swoopy, aggressive lines of the Atto 3 for a cleaner, boxier profile that feels more grounded and practical. Spy shots from earlier sightings also revealed dual-tone alloy wheels, likely around 17 inches, along with partially visible headlights and taillights peeking through the wrap.
This isn’t a one-off sighting either. The Atto 2 has now been spotted testing in India multiple times over the past year, suggesting BYD is putting serious effort into validating the car for local conditions before committing to a launch.
Why This Car Matters
Up until now, BYD’s India lineup has stayed firmly in premium territory, out of reach for buyers trading in a hatchback or a mid-spec sedan. The Atto 2 changes that equation entirely. By bringing in a smaller, more affordable electric SUV, BYD is signaling a direct challenge to the Tata Nexon EV, currently the undisputed leader of India’s mass-market EV segment. It’s also expected to compete with the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, and the upcoming Maruti e-Vitara.
Globally, the Atto 2 is offered in both EV and PHEV forms, though BYD currently sells only fully electric models in India, so the local launch is likely to stick to the battery-electric version. Under the hood, or rather, under the floor, the car uses BYD’s Blade Battery technology built on the e-Platform 3.0 architecture, the same underpinnings shared with the Atto 3. International specifications include 45.1kWh and 51.1kWh battery pack options, an electric motor producing around 173bhp and 290Nm of torque, and a WLTP-rated range of roughly 312km on a full charge. Performance figures point to a 0-100kph time of about 7.9 seconds and a top speed near 160kph.
Cabin and Features
Inside, expect a familiar BYD approach: a large, rotatable 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.8-inch digital driver’s display, and a minimalist dashboard finished in either all-black or a beige-and-black theme. Reports also point to a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera, ADAS features, and a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function that lets the car power external devices, all fairly generous for a car expected to be priced well under its bigger sibling.
Expected Pricing and Launch Timeline
While BYD India hasn’t made anything official yet, industry chatter suggests a price tag under ₹16-18 lakh could be on the cards if the company gets localisation right. That would place it squarely in Nexon EV territory and make it one of the most tech-loaded options in its price bracket. A launch window sometime in late 2026 seems plausible given how frequently test mules are being spotted, though BYD has stayed quiet on specifics so far.
For now, all eyes remain on these test mules. If BYD nails the pricing, the Atto 2 could genuinely shake up the affordable EV space in India rather than just adding another premium option to its shelf.
