India’s sub-4-metre SUV segment is heading for another major shake-up, with Renault, Mahindra and Volkswagen preparing new models for 2027. The segment already includes popular names such as the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO, but the upcoming launches could make competition even tougher.
Renault’s New Compact SUV
Renault is planning to return strongly to the sub-4-metre SUV space with a new model positioned below the Duster. The SUV, linked to the Bridger concept and internally reported as a compact B-SUV project, is expected to arrive around Diwali 2027.
The upcoming Renault SUV is expected to focus on a rugged and upright design, giving it a more lifestyle-oriented appearance. Reports suggest Renault is considering multiple powertrain options, including petrol, hybrid, CNG and electric versions. A new 1.2-litre petrol engine is also expected to play an important role in the range.
Mahindra Vision S to Target Compact SUV Buyers
Mahindra is also preparing the Vision S, which could become one of the most interesting new entrants in the segment. The production version is expected to be based on the company’s new NU_IQ platform and could be positioned as a smaller, more affordable lifestyle SUV.
The Vision S is expected to retain the boxy styling seen on the concept, including a prominent SUV stance and rugged design elements. Mahindra is reportedly evaluating petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains for the platform, although final specifications have not yet been confirmed. The SUV is expected to arrive in early 2027.
Volkswagen Returns to the Sub-4m SUV Segment
Volkswagen has officially confirmed that it will launch an all-new sub-4-metre SUV in India in 2027. The new model will be developed and manufactured locally using the MQB-A0-IN platform, which already supports several Volkswagen Group models in India.
The upcoming Volkswagen SUV is expected to share its mechanical foundation with the Skoda Kylaq, while receiving a distinctive Volkswagen design and cabin treatment. Reports suggest it could use the familiar 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, paired with manual and automatic transmission options.
Competition Set to Intensify
With three new SUVs entering the market, buyers will have more choices in one of India’s most competitive vehicle categories. Renault could attract customers looking for rugged styling and alternative powertrains, Mahindra may focus on lifestyle appeal, while Volkswagen is expected to target buyers who prioritise driving dynamics, safety and premium build quality.
The 2027 launch cycle could therefore become a crucial period for the sub-4-metre SUV segment, especially as manufacturers increasingly look beyond conventional petrol engines towards hybrid and electric technology.
