Car Sales August 2026: Maruti, Hyundai, Tata & Mahindra Sales

India’s passenger vehicle market continued to show strong momentum in August 2026, with several major carmakers reporting healthy year-on-year growth. Maruti Suzuki remained the country’s largest carmaker by a wide margin, while Tata Motors and Mahindra recorded particularly strong performances. Hyundai also registered growth, although at a slower pace compared with its rivals.

Maruti Suzuki Continues to Lead

Maruti Suzuki reported total sales of 2,19,220 units in August 2026, compared with 1,80,683 units in the same month last year. This represents a 21.3 percent year-on-year increase. Its domestic passenger vehicle sales climbed to 1,76,971 units, up 34.8 percent from 1,31,278 units in August 2025.

The company’s utility vehicle range continued to play an important role in its performance, while demand for compact and mid-size models also remained strong. Maruti has also crossed the one-million-unit sales milestone during the first five months of FY2027.

Hyundai Records Steady Growth

Hyundai Motor India sold 65,796 units in August 2026, registering an 8.8 percent year-on-year increase. The growth was supported by healthy domestic demand, although exports were affected by geopolitical challenges in West Asia.

Hyundai’s SUV portfolio remains an important part of its strategy, with models such as the Creta, Venue and other utility vehicles continuing to attract buyers. The company is also preparing several new products that could further strengthen its position during the upcoming festive season.

Tata Motors Posts Strong August Performance

Tata Motors recorded total passenger vehicle sales of 67,753 units across domestic and international markets in August 2026. This was a significant 56 percent increase over the 43,315 units sold in August 2025. Domestic sales alone stood at 65,253 units, representing 59 percent year-on-year growth.

Electric vehicles were another major contributor to Tata’s performance, with EV sales nearly doubling compared with the previous year. The company’s expanding EV portfolio is helping it maintain strong momentum in the rapidly growing electric car market.

Mahindra Delivers Another Strong Month

Mahindra continued its impressive growth story, recording 59,257 SUV sales in August 2026, up 50 percent from 39,399 units in August 2025. Its strong SUV portfolio, including the Scorpio-N, XUV700, Thar and newer electric models, continues to attract strong customer interest.

Overall, August sales indicate that demand for SUVs, utility vehicles and electric cars remains strong in India. With the festive season approaching, manufacturers are expected to focus on new launches, attractive offers and higher production to meet rising demand.
