Brand-Wise EV Retail Sales August 2026: Tata, Mahindra Lead

India’s electric passenger vehicle market continued its strong growth in August 2026, with retail sales crossing the 30,000-unit mark once again. According to FADA data, electric passenger vehicle retail sales reached around 30,696 units during the month, registering nearly 52% year-on-year growth compared with August 2025. EVs also increased their share of the passenger vehicle market to around 7.6%, up from 5.8% a year earlier.

Tata Motors remained the clear leader in the electric passenger vehicle segment, while Mahindra continued to hold the second position. The strong performance highlights the growing acceptance of electric SUVs and affordable EVs among Indian buyers.

Tata Motors Leads the EV Market

Tata Motors retained its top position with 13,158 electric passenger vehicles retailed in August, according to FADA-based retail data. The company continued to benefit from a broad EV portfolio covering different price points and body styles.

Models such as the Nexon EV, Punch EV and Tiago EV remain important volume contributors for Tata. The company has also been expanding its electric vehicle range, helping it maintain a sizeable lead over rivals. Another industry report based on Vahan data recorded Tata’s August EV retail sales at 13,070 units, underlining its dominant position in the segment.

Mahindra Strengthens Second Position

Mahindra finished second with 6,464 EVs retailed in August, according to the FADA-based figures. Its EV sales have been supported primarily by the BE 6 and XEV 9e, giving the brand a strong presence in the electric SUV market.

Mahindra’s EV portfolio is particularly notable because it focuses heavily on premium electric SUVs rather than small hatchbacks. The upcoming expansion of its born-electric range could further strengthen the company’s position in the coming months.

EV Competition Is Getting Stronger

The competition behind Tata and Mahindra is also becoming more interesting. JSW MG Motor continues to remain among the leading mass-market EV brands, while VinFast moved ahead of Maruti Suzuki in August according to Vahan-based data.

Overall, August’s retail numbers show that electric cars are moving beyond being a niche choice in India. Passenger EV sales have now remained above the 30,000-unit monthly level for several months, indicating that consumer interest is becoming more consistent.

With new launches expected from Tata, Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia and other manufacturers, the Indian EV market is likely to become even more competitive. Tata currently has the volume advantage, but Mahindra’s expanding electric SUV portfolio could make the gap increasingly important to watch in the months ahead.
