BMW is preparing to expand its next-generation electric vehicle line-up, and the upcoming BMW iX4 could be one of the brand’s next major additions. The electric coupe-SUV is expected to sit alongside the new iX3 as part of BMW’s wider Neue Klasse strategy, with reports pointing towards a possible debut later in 2026. The iX4 is also expected to replace the conventional X4 in BMW’s future model range.
Neue Klasse Platform
The new BMW iX4 is expected to use BMW’s Neue Klasse electric vehicle architecture, the same technology direction introduced with the latest iX3. This platform is designed to bring improvements in efficiency, charging performance, software and battery technology compared with BMW’s current-generation EVs.
BMW has already started introducing the Neue Klasse family with the iX3, while the new i3 is also part of the same broader electric strategy. The company is expected to use the platform for several upcoming models across different segments.
Coupe-SUV Design Expected
The iX4 is likely to retain the sporty coupe-SUV shape associated with the X4, but with a more modern electric-focused design. BMW is expected to give the model a distinctive front-end treatment, a sloping roofline and a cleaner body profile.
The design could also borrow visual elements from BMW’s recent Neue Klasse models. This means buyers can expect a more minimalist appearance compared with the current X4, while still retaining the aggressive proportions associated with BMW’s coupe-SUVs.
Range and Charging Technology
BMW has not yet released official technical specifications for the iX4. However, the Neue Klasse platform is expected to bring significant improvements in battery efficiency and charging capability.
BMW’s next-generation EV technology is focused on delivering higher range, faster charging, and better overall energy efficiency. The company has indicated that its new battery and electrical architecture can provide substantial improvements over its previous-generation systems.
Expected Competition
Once launched, the BMW iX4 could compete with premium electric SUVs and coupe-style EVs from Mercedes-Benz, Audi and other luxury manufacturers. Its combination of a sporty design, premium cabin, and electric powertrain could make it an important model for BMW as the luxury EV market becomes increasingly competitive.
Possible Debut Later in 2026
BMW has not officially confirmed a global debut date for the iX4, so the reported 2026 timeline should be treated as expected rather than confirmed. If the model is revealed later this year, more details about its battery options, performance, range, and market availability should emerge closer to the launch.
For BMW, the iX4 could become an important step in expanding the Neue Klasse family beyond the iX3 and i3, giving customers a more stylish electric alternative in the premium coupe-SUV segment.
