Mercedes-Benz is taking a significant step forward in its electric vehicle strategy with the new GLC 400 4MATIC Electric. Unlike the earlier EQ models, the electric GLC has been developed as a dedicated EV rather than simply adapting an existing combustion-powered model. After driving the SUV in Germany, the first impression is of a premium electric SUV that places refinement, performance and long-distance usability at the centre of its character.
Distinctive Design With a Premium Presence
The electric GLC gets a completely different exterior design from the conventional GLC. Its large illuminated front grille gives it a distinctive appearance, while the wide stance and relatively low roofline make the SUV look planted on the road. Mercedes has also focused on aerodynamics, helping the car achieve its impressive efficiency and range figures.
The cabin follows a much more technology-focused approach. The highlight is the 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, which stretches across the dashboard. Despite the amount of technology, the interior retains the premium materials and solid build quality expected from a Mercedes-Benz. The return of conventional rotary controls on the steering wheel is also a welcome change for easier operation while driving.
Strong Performance Without Being Difficult to Drive
The GLC 400 4MATIC uses dual electric motors, producing 360kW (around 483hp) and 800Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels, allowing the SUV to accelerate from 0- 100 km/h in around 4.3 seconds. Despite this performance, the power delivery is smooth rather than aggressive, making the GLC easy to drive in everyday conditions.
The SUV also benefits from rear-wheel steering, which improves manoeuvrability at lower speeds and adds stability at higher speeds. During the first drive, the steering felt precise, and the body remained composed through corners. However, the smooth German roads make it difficult to judge how the suspension will perform on rougher Indian surfaces.
Impressive Range and Fast Charging
One of the biggest strengths of the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric is its claimed WLTP range of up to 715km. The SUV supports DC fast charging at up to 330kW, with Mercedes-Benz claiming a 10-80 per cent charging time of approximately 22 minutes under suitable conditions.
Inside, there is also good passenger and luggage space. The boot offers 570 litres, while the additional 128-litre front storage compartment improves practicality. Rear-seat legroom is generous, although the lack of a reclining backrest and limited under-thigh support could be better.
First Drive Impression
The Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Electric feels particularly convincing in refinement. The cabin remains impressively quiet even at high speeds, while the suspension and electric powertrain create a relaxed driving experience.
For India, the biggest unanswered question will be ride quality on broken roads and final pricing. Mercedes-Benz is expected to launch the electric GLC in India towards the end of 2026, with local assembly planned. If the India-spec model retains its current combination of range, technology, performance and comfort, it could become an important model in Mercedes-Benz’s electric portfolio.
