JSW MG Motor India has officially confirmed that a new “New Energy Vehicle” will debut on July 16, 2026. And going by what’s been spotted on Indian roads, this is almost certainly going to be the MG plug-in hybrid SUV the market has been waiting for. It could genuinely change the game for buyers sitting on the fence between EVs and petrol cars.
Why This Launch Actually Matters
India already has MG’s EV lineup; the Comet, the ZS EV, and the Windsor have all carved out their space. But a plug-in hybrid is a different animal altogether. A PHEV gives you a real electric-only range for your daily city driving and a petrol engine for those long highway stretches. No compromise. That’s the pitch and it’s a strong one.
The MG plug-in hybrid SUV is widely expected to be a rebadged Wuling Starlight 560, which has been caught testing on Indian roads multiple times now. MG hasn’t confirmed the name yet, but all signs point in that direction.
What To Expect Under The Hood
Here’s where things get genuinely exciting. The global version of this SUV packs a 1.5-liter petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 20.5 kWh battery. Combined output sits around 195–197 hp, and the electric-only range is claimed at 100–125 km more than enough for the average Indian commuter’s weekly driving.
The total range? Over 1,000 km on a full tank and charge. That’s not a typo. For anyone doing Mumbai–Pune or Delhi–Jaipur runs regularly, that number alone should get your attention.
Size, Features, and What You’d Actually Get
The Starlight 560 measures close to 4.7 meters—comfortably in the full-size SUV territor and is available in both 5-seat and 7-seat layouts internationally. MG is likely to bring the 7-seat version to India, given the family SUV demand here.
On the features front, expect a 12.8-inch touchscreen, a fully digital driver display, connected car tech, leatherette seats, cruise control, and ADAS safety features on higher variants. It’s a well-loaded package, honestly.
Who Will It Fight Against
Once it hits showrooms, likely around the festive season, the MG plug-in hybrid SUV will go toe-to-toe with the Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Tata Safari. But here’s the thing: neither of those offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain. That’s MG’s real advantage here. In a segment full of diesel and petrol-only options, a PHEV with 100+ km of electric range stands out.

The July 16 reveal is just the beginning. If MG prices this smartly and they’ve generally been aggressive with value, the MG plug-in hybrid SUV could become one of the most sensible buys in its price bracket. Great for the city.
