Tata Motors has once again reinforced its reputation as one of India’s safest carmakers. The Tata Punch EV, the company’s compact electric SUV, has been awarded a full 5-star rating by the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) for both adult and child occupant protection. This makes the Punch EV one of the highest-rated vehicles under India’s indigenous crash test protocol, and it strengthens Tata’s growing lineup of five-star-rated cars, which already includes the Nexon EV, Safari, Harrier, and Altroz.
What the Crash Test Results Show
Bharat NCAP evaluates vehicles across a range of controlled crash scenarios, including a frontal offset deformable barrier test, a side movable deformable barrier test, and a side pole impact test. In its most recent evaluation, the Punch EV recorded strong scores across all categories in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) segment, alongside excellent results in the Child Occupant Protection (COP) segment, which includes dynamic testing and evaluation of child restraint systems (CRS).
Notably, this is not the first time the Punch EV has been put through Bharat NCAP’s testing regime. The model was originally tested in April 2024, where it scored 31.46 out of 32 points for adult protection and 45 out of 49 for child protection at the time, the highest scores achieved by any vehicle under the programme. The 2026 facelifted version of the Punch EV has now been retested, scoring a marginally adjusted 31.09 out of 32 for adult protection while retaining the same 45 out of 49 score for child protection. Despite the slight dip in the adult protection number, the car has comfortably held on to its 5-star status.
Why This Matters for Indian Car Buyers
Bharat NCAP, launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, was introduced to give Indian consumers an independent, credible way to assess vehicle safety without relying solely on international assessments. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has repeatedly emphasized that the programme aligns with the government’s broader vision of building safer vehicles for Indian roads.
For buyers, a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating is a strong practical signal. It indicates robust structural integrity, effective airbag deployment, and dependable protection systems such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and ISOFIX child seat anchors, features that matter in real-world driving conditions, especially given the diversity and unpredictability of Indian traffic.
Punch EV: Specifications and Pricing
The Tata Punch EV is currently offered with two battery pack options: a 25kWh unit delivering an MIDC-rated range of around 315km, and a larger 35kWh pack offering roughly 421km. Motor output varies by variant, with the standard version producing 82hp and 114Nm of torque, while the Long Range variant steps up to 122hp and 190 Nm. Charging is supported via a 3.3kW wall box charger as standard, with a 7.2kW fast charger available for quicker top-ups. Prices for the Punch EV range from approximately ₹10.99 lakh to ₹15.49 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a genuinely safe and affordable entry point into the EV segment.
