BMW has showcased the new X5 and its all-electric iX5 in long-wheelbase form for the Chinese market. The two SUVs are part of BMW’s latest generation of models and bring a significantly more spacious rear cabin, updated styling, and a technology-heavy interior. While these versions have been developed specifically with China in mind, the long-wheelbase X5 is also expected to make its way to India.
The new BMW X5 and iX5 LWB get a 130mm longer wheelbase than the standard models, taking the wheelbase to 3,165mm. Their overall length stands at 5,125mm. The additional length has primarily been used to improve rear-seat space and comfort, an important factor for luxury SUV buyers in markets such as China and India.
Visually, the long-wheelbase versions follow BMW’s latest design direction inspired by the Neue Klasse family. The SUVs feature new lighting signatures, revised bumpers, and updated detailing at the front and rear. BMW is also offering its distinctive double-X lighting signature as an option, giving the SUVs a more recognizable appearance.
The biggest changes are inside the cabin. The X5 and iX5 LWB feature BMW’s latest Panoramic iDrive display layout, along with a centrally positioned rhomboidal infotainment screen and an optional passenger display. For rear-seat occupants, BMW has added an exclusive Theatre Screen with an 8K display. It supports entertainment, gaming, smartphone connectivity, and video calling, making the rear cabin considerably more premium.
The iX5 is particularly important as it becomes the first fully electric X5 model. BMW says the China-specific iX5 combines the design and technology of the new X5 with technologies from the Neue Klasse generation. The company has also highlighted a CLTC driving range of more than 1,000km for the China-specification electric SUV, although real-world range is expected to be lower.
For India, the long-wheelbase X5 could be a strong addition to BMW’s portfolio. The company already sells several long-wheelbase models in India, including the 3 Series, 5 Series, and X1, indicating that there is demand for chauffeur-focused luxury vehicles.
BMW has not yet announced an India launch date for the new X5 and iX5 LWB. However, reports indicate that India is among the markets being considered for the long-wheelbase X5. If launched here, the SUV could offer significantly more rear-seat comfort while retaining the premium positioning of the X5.
The new-generation X5 is expected to strengthen BMW’s position in the luxury SUV segment, while the electric iX5 could give the brand a more direct rival to premium electric SUVs arriving in India over the next few years.
