Tata Avinya Premium EV: Tata’s Chance to Go Truly Premium

Tata Motors has already established itself as one of India’s strongest electric carmakers, but its next challenge is much bigger: moving beyond mainstream EVs and building a genuinely premium electric vehicle brand. This is where Avinya could become a turning point for Tata.

First showcased as a futuristic electric concept in 2022, Avinya was conceived as Tata’s answer to the premium EV market. The concept focused on spaciousness, minimalist design, advanced technology and a more relaxed cabin experience rather than simply chasing performance figures. Tata’s own vision positioned Avinya as a premium yet human-centric electric mobility experience.

The programme has, however, changed significantly. Tata originally planned to use Jaguar Land Rover’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) for Avinya. In 2026, the company confirmed that the first Avinya model will instead use the Freelander platform developed by Chery-JLR. The first production model, expected to be called Avinya X, is now targeted for launch in India in 2027.

This change could actually work in Tata’s favour. Using an existing architecture can help reduce development time and control costs, allowing Tata to concentrate its resources on areas customers directly experience, including design, software, cabin quality, refinement and after-sales experience.

That last point will be particularly important. Going premium is not just about launching a larger or more expensive EV. Tata will have to deliver a completely different ownership experience. Reports indicate that Avinya is being positioned separately from Tata’s regular EV range, with a more premium retail and customer-experience strategy.

The Avinya X concept already provides an indication of what Tata wants to achieve. It features a sophisticated exterior, lounge-like interior, sustainable materials and a calmer approach to technology. Instead of filling the cabin with screens, Tata has focused on creating a more comfortable and less distracting environment.

For Tata, Avinya is therefore more than another electric SUV. It is a test of whether the company can move into a space traditionally dominated by premium global brands.

If Tata gets the product quality, software, refinement, charging technology and ownership experience right, Avinya could give the company a credible premium identity. The upcoming 2027 launch will reveal whether Tata can finally turn its ambitious EV technology and design vision into a truly premium Indian automotive brand.
