Renault could be preparing an interesting new update for the Triber, as a test mule believed to be a Turbo-CNG version has reportedly been spotted during road testing. The development suggests that the French carmaker may be exploring a factory-fitted CNG option paired with a turbocharged petrol engine, potentially giving the popular budget MPV a stronger mix of performance and running-cost efficiency.
The Renault Triber has built its reputation around practicality, flexible seating and affordability. However, its current 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine has often been considered adequate rather than particularly powerful, especially when the vehicle is fully loaded. A turbocharged engine could address this concern, while a CNG setup may help reduce fuel costs for high-mileage buyers.
Turbo Power Could Improve Everyday Performance
The spotted test vehicle is expected to feature a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, although Renault has not officially confirmed the powertrain details. If the company introduces a turbocharged CNG version, it could offer better low-end torque and stronger performance compared with the existing naturally aspirated petrol model.
This could be particularly useful for Triber buyers who frequently travel with five to seven passengers. Better torque delivery would make city driving, overtaking and highway cruising more comfortable, while CNG could keep the cost per kilometre under control.
However, the exact power and torque figures, transmission options and final engine calibration remain unknown at this stage.
Factory-Fitted CNG Could Be a Major Advantage
If launched with a company-fitted CNG kit, the Triber Turbo-CNG could attract customers looking for a practical family vehicle with lower running costs. Factory-developed CNG systems generally offer better integration with the engine and vehicle electronics compared with many aftermarket installations.
Renault could also optimise the fuel system, safety components and engine management specifically for CNG operation. This may provide buyers with greater peace of mind, especially those planning to use the MPV for regular family travel or commercial purposes.
The challenge for Renault will be maintaining usable luggage space, as the Triber’s flexible seating and practicality are among its biggest selling points. The company may explore a packaging solution that minimises the impact of the CNG tank on everyday usability.
Design Changes May Be Limited
The test mule is expected to retain the familiar Triber design, although Renault could introduce minor cosmetic changes if the Turbo-CNG arrives alongside a broader model update. Changes could include revised badges, new alloy wheel designs or small updates to the interior equipment list.
Renault may also use the opportunity to improve features and safety equipment, depending on when the new powertrain reaches production.
Renault Triber Turbo-CNG: What to Expect
For now, Renault has not announced an official launch timeline for the Triber Turbo-CNG. The spotted prototype indicates that the company is evaluating new powertrain possibilities, but production approval and final specifications are yet to be confirmed.
If Renault successfully combines turbocharged performance, CNG efficiency and the Triber’s practical seven-seat layout, the upcoming variant could create a unique position in India’s affordable MPV segment. More details should emerge as testing continues, and Renault is expected to reveal its plans officially closer to launch.
