India’s passenger vehicle market recorded strong growth in August 2026, with Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra delivering another impressive performance. Tata Motors retained its position ahead of Mahindra in monthly passenger vehicle sales, while both manufacturers recorded substantial year-on-year growth.
Tata Motors registered 65,253 domestic passenger vehicle sales in August 2026, compared with 41,001 units during the same month last year. This represents a 59% year-on-year increase. Including exports, Tata’s passenger vehicle sales stood at 67,753 units, up 56% from 43,315 units in August 2025.
Mahindra also delivered a strong performance, selling 59,257 SUVs in the domestic market during August. The company recorded a 50% year-on-year increase over the 39,399 units sold in August 2025. Mahindra’s overall automotive sales, including exports and other vehicle segments, reached 1,07,648 units, registering 42% growth.
The difference between Tata and Mahindra’s domestic passenger vehicle volumes was around 5,996 units in August. While Tata has a broader portfolio covering hatchbacks, compact SUVs, midsize SUVs and electric vehicles, Mahindra’s passenger vehicle business remains heavily focused on SUVs.
Tata’s electric vehicle portfolio was another major contributor to its performance. The company sold 16,549 EVs during August 2026 across domestic and international markets, almost double the 8,540 units recorded in August last year. This represents a 94% year-on-year increase.
Mahindra, meanwhile, continued to benefit from strong demand for its SUV range. Models such as the Scorpio-N and its newer electric offerings have helped the company maintain strong momentum in the utility vehicle segment. Mahindra also reported that its updated Scorpio-N and BE 6 SporteQ received a positive market response during the month.
The broader passenger vehicle market also remained healthy in August. Several manufacturers reported double-digit growth, supported partly by a favourable year-ago base and increasing demand ahead of the festive season. Industry reports suggest that the market is entering the festive period with positive momentum.
For Tata and Mahindra, the August numbers highlight an increasingly competitive battle for the second position in India’s passenger vehicle market. Tata’s diversified lineup and strong EV presence give it an advantage in terms of product variety, while Mahindra continues to build its position through its SUV-focused strategy.
With the festive season approaching, both manufacturers are expected to focus on deliveries, new launches and attractive offers. The coming months could therefore make the Tata-Mahindra sales battle even more interesting.
