Toyota is preparing to expand its SUV portfolio in India with two globally important models, the Land Cruiser FJ and Corolla Cross. While both SUVs are expected to arrive in the latter part of this decade, they will target very different buyers. The Land Cruiser FJ will focus on rugged off-road capability, while the Corolla Cross is expected to offer a more practical and premium family SUV experience.
The Land Cruiser FJ has already entered production in Japan and is positioned as the more compact and accessible member of the Land Cruiser family. Toyota says the FJ has been developed around the idea of making the Land Cruiser experience available to more customers without compromising its core strengths of durability, reliability and off-road performance.
For India, the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be manufactured locally at Toyota’s upcoming facility in Maharashtra. Reports suggest that the SUV could arrive around the end of 2028. It will use a ladder-frame platform related to Toyota’s IMV architecture and is expected to feature part-time four-wheel drive. A 2.7-litre petrol engine producing around 163hp is expected, while strong-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions could follow.
The FJ’s boxy styling, upright stance and rugged bodywork should give it a strong road presence. It is likely to appeal to buyers looking for an SUV with genuine off-road credentials rather than just an urban crossover.
The second major model is the Toyota Corolla Cross. Unlike the FJ, the Corolla Cross is expected to be positioned as a mainstream premium SUV and could compete with models in the mid-size and three-row SUV segments, depending on the India-spec configuration.
Toyota’s plans for the Corolla Cross have reportedly been revived, with the SUV expected to be among the first models produced at the company’s upcoming Maharashtra facility. Current reports point towards a late-2028 or early-2029 launch window.
The India-spec Corolla Cross could feature petrol and strong-hybrid powertrains, along with advanced driver assistance systems and premium cabin technology. A three-row version has also been discussed, although Toyota has not yet officially confirmed all India-specific details.
With the Land Cruiser FJ and Corolla Cross, Toyota could strengthen its presence across two important SUV categories. The FJ would bring a new rugged lifestyle option, while the Corolla Cross could become a practical hybrid-focused family SUV. More details about pricing, specifications and exact launch timelines are expected closer to their India debut.
