Mahindra is expanding its electrification strategy beyond pure electric vehicles, with the company reportedly evaluating new hybrid and range-extender powertrains for its upcoming SUVs. The XUV 7XO is expected to get a strong-hybrid setup, while the XEV 9e is being considered for a range-extender version.
The move comes as Mahindra continues to strengthen its EV portfolio while also preparing for changing emission regulations and varying customer demand for electrified vehicles. The company already has several electric SUVs based on its INGLO platform, including the XEV 9e and XEV 9S.
XUV 7XO Could Get Strong-Hybrid Technology
The XUV 7XO is reportedly being evaluated with a conventional strong-hybrid powertrain. Unlike a range extender, a strong hybrid can use both the petrol engine and electric motor to drive the vehicle, depending on driving conditions.
This technology could make the XUV 7XO more efficient in city traffic while retaining the practicality of a petrol-powered SUV for longer journeys. Reports suggest that the hybrid version could arrive around 2027, although Mahindra has not officially announced launch timelines or technical specifications yet.
The strategy could also give Mahindra an alternative to large petrol and diesel SUVs at a time when manufacturers are looking for ways to reduce fleet emissions without completely moving away from internal-combustion engines.
XEV 9e Range-Extender Under Evaluation
Mahindra is also understood to be studying range-extender technology for its INGLO-based electric SUVs, with the XEV 9e among the models being evaluated.
A range-extender system works differently from a traditional hybrid. In this setup, the petrol engine primarily acts as a generator to recharge the battery rather than directly powering the wheels. The electric motor remains responsible for driving the vehicle.
This approach could offer an EV-like driving experience while reducing concerns about charging infrastructure and long-distance travel. It could be particularly useful for buyers who want an electric SUV but are still worried about finding charging stations during highway journeys.
A Wider Electrification Strategy
Mahindra’s latest approach indicates that the company is not relying on a single powertrain technology. Instead, it appears to be developing different electrification solutions for different SUV platforms and customer requirements.
The company already sells the XEV 9S as a three-row electric SUV, while the XEV 9e and BE 6 form part of its premium EV portfolio.
For now, details such as battery capacity, engine specifications, electric range, pricing and launch dates for the upcoming hybrid models remain unconfirmed. If these projects move ahead as expected, Mahindra could offer customers a wider choice between pure EVs, strong hybrids and range-extender vehicles in the coming years.
