BMW X1 LWB India Launch Date, Engine and Features

BMW is all set to expand its X1 lineup in India with the new X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB). The stretched version of the luxury SUV is scheduled to launch in India on August 21, 2026, and will be locally produced at BMW’s Chennai facility. The new model is aimed at buyers who want the premium experience of the X1 with more space for rear-seat passengers.

BMW X1 LWB India Launch Date

BMW has confirmed August 21, 2026, as the launch date for the X1 LWB. Pre-launch bookings have already opened, with prices set to be announced on the launch day. The new SUV will sit alongside the standard X1 and the fully electric iX1 LWB in BMW India’s portfolio.

The long-wheelbase version is based on the same X1 platform but gets a significant stretch in its dimensions. It is around 116mm longer than the standard X1, while the wheelbase has been extended by approximately 110mm to around 2,800mm. Most of this additional length has been used to improve rear-seat space.

Engine and Transmission

The BMW X1 LWB is expected to be offered with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. Recent reports indicate that the India-spec version will produce around 156bhp and 230Nm of torque. The engine is expected to be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

This engine setup would make the X1 LWB more powerful than the regular petrol X1 currently available in India. The focus, however, is likely to remain on a balance between performance, efficiency and everyday usability rather than outright performance.

More Space for Rear Passengers

The biggest attraction of the X1 LWB is its extended cabin. The longer wheelbase provides additional knee and legroom for passengers sitting in the second row, making the SUV more suitable for buyers who frequently travel with family.

The boot is also expected to offer useful luggage capacity, while the overall cabin layout remains similar to the standard X1. BMW is essentially using the additional dimensions to make the rear compartment more comfortable without changing the basic character of the SUV.

Features and Interior

The BMW X1 LWB is expected to carry several premium features from the existing X1 and iX1. These include a large curved display combining the digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, wireless smartphone charging and a powered tailgate.

A Harman Kardon sound system is also expected, along with premium upholstery and BMW’s latest connected-car and infotainment technology. The SUV will retain the modern dashboard layout and floating centre-console design seen in the current-generation X1.

What to Expect From the BMW X1 LWB

With more rear-seat space, local production and a premium feature list, the BMW X1 LWB could become an interesting alternative for Indian luxury SUV buyers. It will compete in the same broad segment as models such as the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, but its long-wheelbase configuration gives it an advantage in rear-seat comfort.

BMW is expected to reveal the official price and complete variant details on August 21. The combination of a longer cabin, petrol powertrain and locally assembled construction could make the new X1 LWB one of the more practical luxury SUVs in its segment.
