Nissan Terrano PHEV: New Details Revealed Ahead of 2027 Launch

Nissan is preparing to bring back the Terrano nameplate with a completely different identity. The upcoming Nissan Terrano PHEV has been spotted during road testing, revealing more details about the rugged SUV that is expected to enter production in 2027. The model was first showcased as a concept at the Beijing Auto Show 2026 and is being developed primarily for the Chinese market, with exports to other markets also under consideration.

Rugged Design With Off-Road Focus

Unlike the previous Terrano sold in India, which was closely related to the Renault Duster, the new-generation model is expected to take a much more rugged approach. The concept featured a boxy silhouette, muscular body panels, chunky bumpers, large wheels, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.

The SUV also gets distinctive LED lighting and a wide front design that gives it a strong road presence. The production version is expected to retain much of this adventurous styling, although some concept-specific elements could be toned down for regular production.

Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain

The biggest highlight of the new Terrano is its plug-in hybrid powertrain. Nissan has confirmed the vehicle’s PHEV direction, but detailed specifications such as engine output, battery capacity, electric-only range and combined fuel efficiency have not yet been officially disclosed.

The plug-in hybrid setup should allow the SUV to operate on electric power for shorter daily journeys while providing a petrol engine for longer trips. This combination could make the Terrano particularly interesting in markets where buyers want the flexibility of electrification without depending completely on charging infrastructure.

India Launch Still Under Consideration

Nissan is expected to launch the production Terrano in China in 2027, with international markets potentially following. India is among the markets being considered, but Nissan has not officially confirmed an Indian launch yet.

If introduced here, the Terrano PHEV could sit in a much more premium segment than the older model. Reports suggest an expected Indian price could be around Rs 40 lakh, although this remains an estimate until Nissan announces its plans.

Could Rival Premium SUVs

With its rugged styling, plug-in hybrid technology and potentially premium positioning, the new Terrano could target SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner and other upcoming electrified adventure-focused models. Its final specifications and pricing will determine how competitive it becomes.

For now, the Nissan Terrano PHEV remains an exciting upcoming SUV, particularly because it combines the familiar Terrano name with a completely new PHEV and off-road-oriented character. More details are expected as Nissan moves closer to the production reveal in 2027.
