Honda Cars India is preparing for a major expansion of its product portfolio, with several new models planned for the coming years. The Japanese automaker has confirmed an aggressive product strategy for India, with SUVs, hybrids, and electric vehicles expected to play a bigger role. Honda has also indicated that India-focused models will become an important part of its future lineup from 2028.
Here are four upcoming Honda cars that could be important for the Indian market.
1. Honda 0 Alpha-Based Electric SUV
Honda’s first India-bound mass-market electric SUV is expected to be based on the 0 Alpha concept. The model is being developed with India in mind and is expected to be locally manufactured, with exports also planned. Honda has already started testing the upcoming EV across India.
The production version is expected towards the end of FY2027. It will compete in the growing electric SUV segment and could become an important rival to models from Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra and other EV manufacturers.
2. New Honda Compact SUV
Honda has confirmed plans for a new sub-4-metre SUV for India, although the final name and specifications have not yet been revealed. The upcoming model is expected to target the highly competitive compact SUV segment, where cars such as the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and Maruti Suzuki Brezza are already strong sellers.
Honda’s global strategy indicates that India-focused models in the under-4-metre category will begin arriving from 2028.
3. Honda 7-Seater SUV
A new three-row SUV positioned above the Elevate is also part of Honda’s future India plans. The SUV is expected to offer a spacious cabin and could be developed with both petrol and hybrid powertrain options.
Earlier reports indicated that Honda is developing this model for markets including India, with production expected later in the decade. It could compete with popular three-row SUVs such as the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700.
4. Next-Gen Honda City
The Honda City will also receive a major generational update. The next-generation sedan is expected around 2028 and could feature a new platform along with Honda’s latest hybrid technology.
Honda has already showcased its next-generation hybrid technology, which combines an updated petrol engine with electric motors and a larger battery system. This technology is expected to find its way into future India-bound models, including the next-gen City.
Overall, Honda’s upcoming product strategy suggests a significant shift from its current limited lineup. With three new SUVs and a next-generation City in the pipeline, the company could become a much stronger competitor in India’s rapidly changing automotive market.
