Volkswagen Compact SUV 2027: Kylaq-Based SUV Coming to India

Volkswagen is preparing to enter one of India’s most competitive SUV segments with a new sub-four-metre compact SUV. The upcoming model is expected to arrive in India by 2027 and will be positioned below the Taigun in the company’s SUV range. It will share its underpinnings with the Skoda Kylaq but is expected to get a distinct design and positioning.

The new Volkswagen compact SUV is being developed specifically for the Indian market and will target popular models such as the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO. Volkswagen currently does not have a direct offering in this segment, making the upcoming SUV an important product for expanding its customer base.

Kylaq-Based Platform and Mechanical Package

The upcoming Volkswagen SUV will use the MQB A0 IN platform, the India-specific architecture already used by the Skoda Kylaq and other Volkswagen Group models. High localisation of this platform should help Volkswagen keep production costs under control while offering a product suited to Indian market requirements.

Although the new SUV will share its basic architecture and mechanical components with the Kylaq, Volkswagen is expected to give it a different exterior design. The company has previously followed a similar approach with its Volkswagen and Skoda models, allowing both brands to share technology while maintaining separate identities.

1.0-Litre TSI Engine Expected

Powering the new compact SUV is likely to be the same 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine used in the Skoda Kylaq. In the Kylaq, this three-cylinder motor develops 114 bhp and 178 Nm of peak torque. It is offered with manual and automatic transmission options.

However, Volkswagen has not yet confirmed the final specifications of its upcoming SUV. The transmission setup could be different depending on the final positioning and pricing strategy. More details are expected closer to the launch.

Design and Features

Volkswagen has not revealed the name, exterior design, or interior of the new SUV yet. However, the model is expected to feature styling inspired by the brand’s latest global SUVs while maintaining dimensions suitable for India’s sub-four-metre category.

The cabin could share some technology and components with the Kylaq, although Volkswagen is expected to make changes to the dashboard, trim and equipment to create a separate identity. Features such as a touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrumentation, connected-car technology, automatic climate control and a range of safety systems are expected, but the exact equipment list has not been announced.

Launch Timeline and Competition

The new Volkswagen compact SUV is expected to launch in India by 2027, with reports pointing towards a possible mid-2027 introduction. Volkswagen has yet to announce the official name or exact launch date.

Once launched, the SUV will give Volkswagen a stronger presence in the fast-growing sub-four-metre segment. Its biggest challenge will be competing against established models such as the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO.

With a familiar turbo-petrol engine, India-specific platform and Volkswagen’s distinctive styling, the new SUV could become an important model for the brand. More information about its design, features, pricing and launch timeline is expected to emerge as development progresses.
