Volvo India is all set to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the launch of the Volvo EX90, the company’s most advanced and premium electric SUV to date. According to Volvo’s confirmation, the India debut of the EX90 electric SUV will take place on August 19, 2026, making it the brand’s second EV for the Indian market after the EX30. This launch is a big deal for Volvo India, since the EX90 isn’t just another SUV; it’s positioned as the company’s global flagship offering, carrying forward everything Volvo has learned about safety, design, and electrification.
A True Successor to the XC90
The EX90 essentially takes over from the XC90 as Volvo’s top-of-the-line SUV, but this time it’s built as an electric vehicle from the ground up rather than being adapted from a petrol or diesel platform. That matters a lot for packaging, weight distribution, and overall efficiency. Once it arrives, expect it to go head-to-head with rivals like the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and Kia EV9 in the Indian luxury EV space.
Design That Feels Familiar Yet Fresh
Volvo has never been about flashy or aggressive styling, and the EX90 sticks to that philosophy. It gets a closed-off front grille, sharp LED headlamps with pixel-style running lights, flush-fitting door handles for better aerodynamics, and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor that quietly hints at its advanced driver-assistance capabilities. Around the back, vertical LED tail lamps stretch onto the rear pillars, giving the car a clean, minimalist look that’s unmistakably Scandinavian.
Inside the Cabin
Step inside and the EX90 feels more like a tech-forward lounge than a traditional SUV cabin. There’s a large 14.5-inch portrait-style touchscreen running Google’s built-in software, a digital driver’s display, and a head-up display for good measure. Add to that a Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, four-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, and a panoramic glass roof, and it’s clear Volvo wants this to feel like a genuinely luxurious space. The seating layout is expected to be offered in both six- and seven-seat configurations, so families with different needs should find a variant that suits them. Volvo has also leaned into sustainability here, using recycled and bio-based materials for much of the upholstery.
Battery, Range, and Performance
This is where the EX90 really flexes its engineering. It’s built on an 800V electrical architecture and offers two battery choices: a 92 kWh pack with a single rear motor, and a larger 106 kWh pack with dual motors for all-wheel drive. The bigger battery version comes in two states of tune, with the top Performance variant capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h in around 4 seconds. Thanks to the 800V setup, charging speeds are notably quicker than Volvo’s earlier EVs, too.

Safety Is Still the Big Selling Point
Safety has always been Volvo’s calling card, and the EX90 pushes that reputation even further. It uses a LiDAR sensor alongside a full suite of cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors to build a 360-degree understanding of its surroundings. This feeds into features like automatic emergency braking, lane centering, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a driver monitoring system. There’s also an occupant-sensing feature designed to prevent anyone from accidentally being left behind in the car, including children or pets. Volvo has gone as far as calling it one of the safest vehicles it has ever built, and it reportedly carries 5-star crash ratings from both Euro NCAP and Indian NCAP testing.
Expected Pricing in India
Volvo hasn’t officially confirmed pricing yet, but based on the car’s positioning and international pricing trends, industry estimates suggest the EX90 could be priced somewhere between ₹1.0 crore and ₹1.30 crore (ex-showroom) in India, depending on the variant and battery option chosen. That would place it firmly in the same bracket as its key luxury EV rivals.
Why This Launch Matters
India’s luxury EV segment is still fairly young, but interest is clearly growing among buyers who want performance, safety, and technology without compromising on comfort. The EX90 checks a lot of those boxes: long range, class-leading safety tech, a premium cabin, and genuine seven-seat practicality. If Volvo gets the pricing right, this could easily become one of the most talked-about electric SUVs in the country this year.
