2027 BMW 3 Series Unveiled: New M350 Replaces M340i

BMW has officially unveiled the eighth-generation 3 Series, bringing a major redesign, new technology, and a significant change to its performance lineup. The new 2027 BMW 3 Series, internally known as the G50, adopts design elements inspired by BMW’s Neue Klasse electric models. At the top of the range sits the new M350 xDrive, which replaces the familiar M340i.

New BMW 3 Series Gets a Major Design Change

The 2027 3 Series moves away from the styling of the outgoing G20-generation car. BMW has introduced a cleaner front-end design with slimmer lighting elements, a redesigned kidney grille, and a more prominent shark-nose profile. The grille also features illumination, while the M350 xDrive gets distinctive M Yellow Lights.

The overall design follows BMW’s latest Neue Klasse direction while retaining recognizable 3 Series proportions. The new sedan is also larger than before, with increased length, width, and wheelbase.

M340i Replaced by New M350 xDrive

The biggest change for performance enthusiasts is the retirement of the M340i name. BMW has replaced it with the M350 xDrive, which uses an updated version of the brand’s B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine paired with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.

In US specification, the M350 produces 437 hp and 428 lb-ft (580 Nm) of torque. BMW quotes a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 4.1 seconds, while power is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The mild-hybrid system is not only intended to improve efficiency. BMW engineers have used its additional torque to help provide stronger response before the turbocharger reaches full boost. The updated B58 also receives turbocharger and calibration changes to deliver the additional power.

More Focus on Handling

BMW has equipped the M350 with standard adaptive M suspension, while the car also gets additional chassis hardware and larger tyres. The M Performance sedan is offered with 20-inch wheels and wider rear rubber, helping improve traction and cornering capability.

Another interesting feature is BMW’s planned Drift Moment mode. The M350 will launch with xDrive, but a rear-wheel-drive mode is scheduled to arrive through an over-the-air software update in 2027.

New Interior and Technology

Inside, the new 3 Series follows BMW’s latest digital approach. It features the iDrive X system, a large 17.9-inch central touchscreen and BMW’s Panoramic Vision display technology. The cabin shares several design ideas with the electric i3, creating a more minimalist dashboard compared with the outgoing sedan.

Production of the new 3 Series is scheduled to begin at BMW’s Dingolfing plant in November 2026, with market arrivals following into 2027. The new M350 therefore marks more than just a badge change: it represents BMW’s next step in combining traditional six-cylinder performance with its latest electrification and digital technologies.
