Kia is preparing to expand its electric vehicle portfolio in India with a new B-segment electric SUV, which has now been officially confirmed for the Indian market. The upcoming model will be developed and manufactured locally and is scheduled to arrive by 2029. It will sit between the Kia Syros and Seltos in the brand’s SUV lineup, giving Kia a new offering in one of the fastest-growing electric SUV segments.
The confirmation comes as Kia India outlines a wider electrification strategy for the coming years. Along with the new electric SUV, the company has also announced plans for strong-hybrid versions of the Sonet, Carens Clavis and next-generation Seltos. This indicates that Kia is preparing to offer multiple electrified powertrain options across different segments rather than relying only on battery-electric vehicles.
New Kia Electric SUV to Measure Around 4.2 Metres
The upcoming Kia electric SUV is expected to be around 4.2 metres long, placing it between the Syros and Seltos in terms of overall size. The positioning will allow Kia to target buyers looking for a more spacious electric SUV without moving into the larger and more expensive premium EV category.
The new model is expected to compete with the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, Tata Curvv EV, MG Windsor EV and other electric SUVs operating around this price and size range. Kia has not yet revealed the production name, battery capacity, motor specifications or expected range of the new SUV.
The company’s decision to develop and manufacture the vehicle locally could also help it achieve more competitive pricing when it eventually reaches showrooms. Local production is becoming increasingly important for manufacturers looking to expand EV sales in India while keeping prices under control.
Focus on Local Production
Kia has confirmed that the new B-segment electric SUV will be developed and made in India. While technical details are still limited, local manufacturing could allow the company to use India as an important production base for this upcoming model.
The SUV is expected to use Kia’s latest electric vehicle technology, although the company has not confirmed which platform will underpin it. More information about the battery pack, charging technology, performance and interior features is likely to emerge closer to its development and launch timeline.
Kia’s Electric Lineup to Expand
Kia already sells the EV6 in India and has been gradually building its presence in the premium electric vehicle space. The upcoming B-segment SUV will be significantly more important for volume sales because of its mainstream positioning.
The company’s strategy also shows a clear shift towards electrification across its portfolio. While hybrid models will cater to buyers who may not be ready to switch completely to electric vehicles, the new battery-electric SUV will give Kia a stronger presence in the growing mass-market EV segment.
With the launch scheduled for 2029, the Kia B-segment electric SUV is still several years away. However, its confirmation gives a clear indication of the company’s plans for India. If Kia manages to combine competitive pricing, practical range, fast charging and the premium features associated with the brand, the new SUV could become an important rival to the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara and other upcoming electric SUVs.
