Maruti Suzuki is preparing a major update for its popular premium hatchback, the Baleno. The 2026 Maruti Baleno facelift is expected to arrive in India with several important changes, including a new petrol engine, a factory-fitted CNG automatic option, and advanced driver assistance features. The updated model is expected to continue competing with the Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz.
New 1.2-Litre Z-Series Engine
One of the biggest changes on the upcoming Baleno facelift will be its powertrain. Reports indicate that Maruti Suzuki will replace the current 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with the newer 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine already used in the Swift and Dzire.
The new engine is expected to focus on fuel efficiency and everyday drivability. Maruti has not yet officially announced the final specifications for the updated Baleno, so its exact power and torque figures will be confirmed closer to the launch.
CNG With Automatic Gearbox
The most significant mechanical addition could be the CNG-AMT combination. Maruti Suzuki currently offers CNG models with manual transmissions, but the facelifted Baleno is expected to introduce a factory-fitted CNG automatic setup.
If launched as reported, this would give buyers a more convenient alternative to the traditional CNG-manual configuration. The CNG-AMT option is expected to be available on selected mid-spec variants, although the final variant lineup has not been officially confirmed.
The updated CNG system could also use underbody-mounted technology, which may help preserve more usable boot space compared with conventional CNG installations.
ADAS and More Premium Features
Safety and technology are also expected to receive a major upgrade. The 2026 Baleno facelift is reported to get ADAS features, potentially including functions such as lane assistance and adaptive cruise control. If introduced, this would make the Baleno one of the few premium hatchbacks in India to offer this level of driver assistance technology.
The cabin could also receive ventilated front seats, refreshed upholstery and a revised dual-tone interior theme. Other expected equipment includes updated connectivity and convenience features, while the basic dashboard layout may remain familiar.
Expected Launch and Rivals
Maruti Suzuki is expected to unveil or launch the updated Baleno around September 5, 2026, although the company has yet to officially confirm all details. The facelift is likely to command a modest price premium over the current model because of the additional equipment and new powertrain options.
The Baleno will continue to face competition from the Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz. With a new engine, CNG automatic option and possible ADAS technology, the 2026 Baleno facelift could become a considerably more feature-rich package in the premium hatchback segment.
For buyers looking for a practical hatchback with strong fuel-efficiency credentials, automatic convenience and additional safety technology, the upcoming Baleno facelift could be one of Maruti Suzuki’s most important updates of the year.
