Mitsubishi Pajero Is Back With 2.4-Litre Diesel and 4WD

Mitsubishi has officially brought back the iconic Pajero nameplate with an all-new fifth-generation SUV. The legendary off-roader, which was discontinued in overseas markets in 2021, returns with a rugged ladder-frame platform, a 2.4-litre diesel engine and a proper four-wheel-drive system. Mitsubishi confirmed the new Pajero earlier this year, with its world premiere taking place in September 2026.

The new Pajero has been developed as a large, three-row SUV with a strong focus on off-road capability. Unlike many modern SUVs that are increasingly moving towards monocoque construction and electrified powertrains, the Pajero stays close to its traditional formula. It uses a Triton-derived ladder-frame chassis, giving it the toughness expected from a serious 4×4.

2.4-Litre Diesel Engine With 480Nm

Power comes from a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The engine develops around 201hp and 480Nm of peak torque, giving the SUV strong low-end pulling power for both highway driving and difficult terrain. Reports also indicate that the engine is paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission with a Sport mode.

The high torque output should be particularly useful during off-road driving, where controlled power delivery is more important than outright acceleration. Mitsubishi has also equipped the SUV with advanced four-wheel-drive technology.

Super Select 4WD-II and Off-Road Hardware

The new Pajero gets Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system, along with Super-All Wheel Control technology. These systems work with traction control, Active Yaw Control and ABS to improve grip and stability across different surfaces.

The SUV also features a rugged suspension setup, four-wheel coil springs and a solid rear axle. Its design follows the traditional Pajero formula with an upright stance, short overhangs and a boxy silhouette. Ground clearance is reported at around 230mm, supporting its off-road credentials.

Seven Seats and Premium Cabin

Despite its focus on off-road ability, the new Pajero is not a stripped-down adventure vehicle. Mitsubishi has designed it as a practical family SUV with three rows of seating and a technology-focused cabin. The combination of seven seats, modern equipment and rugged hardware could make it attractive to buyers looking for an SUV that can handle both daily driving and long-distance adventures.

Will the New Pajero Come to India?

For Indian SUV enthusiasts, the biggest question is whether Mitsubishi will bring the new Pajero here. The company has not confirmed an India launch so far. Globally, the new Pajero is expected to target established off-road SUVs such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Ford Everest.

With its diesel engine, ladder-frame construction, three-row layout and 4WD system, the new Mitsubishi Pajero marks a significant return to the formula that made the nameplate famous. If Mitsubishi eventually considers India, the Pajero could become an interesting alternative for buyers seeking a genuinely capable premium 4×4 SUV.
