Kia has unveiled new details about the Syros Flex-Fuel Vehicle (FFV) concept in India, marking the company’s first flex-fuel passenger vehicle for the Indian market. The new version of the compact SUV has been developed to operate on petrol, ethanol and different petrol-ethanol fuel blends. However, Kia has not yet confirmed when the production-spec Syros Flex-Fuel will be launched in India.
The Syros Flex-Fuel is being showcased as Kia explores alternative powertrain technologies for India. The move comes as the country continues to increase ethanol blending in petrol and prepares for the wider adoption of higher-ethanol-content fuels.
Kia Syros Flex-Fuel Gets 1.0-Litre Turbo Engine
The Syros Flex-Fuel concept is powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. Kia has not revealed the power and torque figures for this particular flex-fuel version yet.
The engine has received several modifications to make it compatible with varying ethanol concentrations. Kia has made changes to the engine control unit (ECU), transmission control unit (TCU) and fuel system. These updates allow the engine to operate on petrol, ethanol and different combinations of the two fuels.
One of the biggest differences compared with the regular Syros turbo-petrol is the transmission. While the standard 1.0-litre turbo version uses a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, the flex-fuel concept gets a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. Kia has not confirmed whether this exact gearbox will be used in a future production model.
Same SUV Design
Visually, the Syros Flex-Fuel remains largely similar to the standard SUV currently sold in India. The concept retains the Syros’ upright stance, distinctive lighting elements, and boxy design. Most of the changes have been made underneath the skin to accommodate the new fuel technology.
The cabin layout also continues to follow the standard Syros, with its modern dashboard and multi-screen setup. This means buyers are unlikely to see major design changes if Kia eventually brings the flex-fuel technology to a production version.
Production Plans Yet to Be Confirmed
Kia has not announced the launch timeline, pricing, or final specifications of the Syros Flex-Fuel. For now, the vehicle is being used to demonstrate Kia’s progress with flex-fuel technology in India.
The development is significant as more manufacturers are preparing for higher ethanol blends in the country. Maruti Suzuki has already introduced the WagonR Bioflex, while other manufacturers, including Toyota, Hyundai, Tata and Mahindra, have also demonstrated or announced plans involving flex-fuel technology.
If Kia decides to bring the Syros Flex-Fuel to showrooms, it could be an interesting option for buyers seeking a petrol SUV that can adapt to India’s evolving fuel landscape.
