Maruti New EV Could Rival Tata Tiago EV in India

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to expand its electric vehicle portfolio with more affordable models aimed at bringing EV technology to a wider section of Indian buyers. After entering the electric SUV segment with the e Vitara, the company is now expected to focus on smaller electric cars that could compete with popular entry-level models such as the Tata Tiago EV.

The upcoming Maruti EV is expected to be positioned below the e Vitara and could target customers looking for an affordable city-focused electric car. Recent reports suggest that Maruti is planning small EVs for the Indian market, although the company has not yet revealed the production version, name, specifications, or launch timeline.

Maruti’s Focus on Affordable EVs

Maruti Suzuki has traditionally dominated the affordable hatchback segment with models such as the Alto, Wagon R and Swift. Bringing an electric model into this price-sensitive category could help the company attract buyers who are currently considering petrol hatchbacks or entry-level EVs.

The new EV is expected to make extensive use of localised components to keep production costs under control. However, Maruti is also working on strengthening its EV charging ecosystem, which will be important as the company expands beyond the e Vitara.

Tata Tiago EV Could Be a Key Rival

The Tata Tiago EV currently occupies an important position in India’s affordable electric car market. The updated 2026 model starts at Rs 6.99 lakh, ex-showroom, and is offered with 19.2kWh and 24kWh battery options. The larger battery version has an ARAI-certified range of up to 285km.

The Tiago EV also supports DC fast charging, with the 24kWh version capable of charging from 10 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes using a 30kW DC charger. These specifications make it suitable for buyers who mainly use their cars for urban commuting but want the flexibility of occasional longer journeys.

What to Expect From the New Maruti EV

While technical details remain under wraps, Maruti is likely to prioritise affordability, efficiency and ease of ownership. A compact footprint, practical cabin and competitive driving range could make the new EV particularly attractive to urban buyers.

Pricing will be one of the biggest factors. If Maruti manages to position its upcoming EV close to the Tiago EV, the competition could become intense in the entry-level electric car segment.

For now, Maruti has not confirmed the final name, battery capacity, or launch date of this smaller EV. More details are expected as the company moves ahead with its wider electric mobility strategy. With demand for alternative-fuel vehicles continuing to rise in India, an affordable Maruti EV could become an important addition to the market.
