Kia Upcoming Hybrids: Seltos, Carnival and More

Kia is preparing to expand its hybrid portfolio in India as demand for fuel-efficient vehicles continues to grow. The South Korean automaker has confirmed plans to introduce multiple hybrid models across different segments, putting it in a stronger position to compete with established hybrid players such as Toyota and Maruti Suzuki.

The company’s hybrid strategy will not be limited to a single SUV. Kia’s roadmap includes the Sorento and Carnival in the near term, while models such as the Sonet, Carens Clavis and Seltos are also expected to receive hybrid powertrains by 2029. This could significantly change Kia’s position in India, where its current lineup is largely dependent on petrol and diesel powertrains.

Kia Seltos Hybrid to Target Maruti and Toyota

Among the upcoming models, the Seltos Hybrid could be one of Kia’s most important launches. The popular mid-size SUV is expected to receive a strong-hybrid powertrain as part of Kia’s future electrification strategy.

The Seltos Hybrid is likely to compete directly with the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, both of which have established themselves in the strong-hybrid SUV segment. Kia could use the Seltos nameplate’s existing popularity, premium features and SUV styling to attract customers looking for better fuel efficiency without switching to a fully electric vehicle.

The company is also expected to introduce hybrid technology in smaller models such as the Sonet and Carens Clavis over the coming years. This would allow Kia to offer hybrid options across multiple price segments.

Carnival Hybrid Could Bring Hybrid Power to Premium MPVs

Kia is also preparing a strong-hybrid version of the Carnival. The upcoming Carnival Hybrid will use a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 180hp and 265Nm, paired with a more powerful electric motor. Kia has confirmed that the hybrid system will be offered with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Carnival Hybrid is expected to be positioned as a more efficient alternative to the existing diesel-powered MPV. With its spacious cabin and premium positioning, it could appeal to buyers who want a large family vehicle but are increasingly concerned about fuel costs.

A Wider Hybrid Push

Kia’s strategy shows that the company is preparing for a market where petrol, diesel, hybrid, CNG and electric vehicles are likely to coexist. Kia has outlined a plan to have eight electrified models in India by 2030, combining hybrids and EVs.

With the Seltos, Carnival and other future hybrid models, Kia could emerge as a serious competitor to Toyota and Maruti Suzuki in India’s growing hybrid market.
