BMW India has officially revealed the new i5 Long Wheelbase (LWB) for the Indian market and opened bookings for the electric luxury sedan. The upcoming model will be locally produced at BMW Group Plant Chennai, making it the first locally manufactured electric sedan from the German automaker in India.
The BMW i5 LWB is aimed at buyers looking for a premium electric sedan with a spacious rear cabin, long driving range and a strong focus on comfort. The company has also announced a First Edition, which will be limited to just 99 units. Customers can book the car through authorised BMW dealerships or register their interest on the BMW India website.
BMW i5 LWB Design and Dimensions
The i5 LWB retains the familiar design language of the current 5 Series, but its stretched proportions give it a more executive-focused appearance. The long wheelbase is particularly noticeable from the side, where the larger rear doors and extended cabin highlight its focus on rear-seat comfort.
The electric sedan measures 5,175mm in length, 1,900mm in width and 1,520mm in height. It gets a 3,105mm wheelbase, making it one of the most spacious sedans in its segment. BMW says the car has been developed with a strong emphasis on rear passenger space and comfort, which should appeal to chauffeur-driven customers.
The First Edition will feature exclusive styling touches, including Titanium Bronze accents and a Carbon Black Metallic exterior shade. The special version will be restricted to 99 customers at launch.
81.6kWh Battery and 669km Range
Powering the BMW i5 LWB is an 81.6kWh battery pack. BMW claims a maximum range of up to 669km on the MIDC cycle, giving the sedan the potential to cover long distances between charging stops.
The electric motor produces around 268hp, while BMW claims a 0-100kmph acceleration time of 6.7 seconds. This combination should give the i5 LWB a balance between smooth everyday performance and the quick acceleration expected from a premium electric vehicle.
The car also gets an adaptive rear-axle air suspension setup, which is expected to improve ride comfort and help the sedan handle uneven Indian roads more effectively.
Made in India for the Luxury EV Market
The local production of the BMW i5 LWB is an important development for BMW India. It will be the second electric BMW to be manufactured at the Chennai plant after the iX1 LWB and the company’s first locally produced electric sedan.
BMW has not yet announced the final price of the i5 LWB. The company is expected to launch the electric sedan in India in the coming weeks. Pricing and detailed variant information will be revealed closer to the official launch.
With its long wheelbase, premium rear-seat experience, locally assembled construction and claimed 669km range, the BMW i5 LWB could become an interesting option for buyers seeking a luxury electric sedan with a strong focus on comfort and practicality.
