BMW has just given the world another look at its most important new electric SUV, and this time the stage was Southeast Asia. At the 2026 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), held at ICE-BSD City in Tangerang, BMW Group Indonesia officially unveiled the new BMW iX3, marking the first appearance of the brand’s Neue Klasse platform in the Indonesian market. For BMW fans in India, the reveal carries extra weight, since this very SUV is confirmed to make its way to Indian showrooms in the coming months.
A New Era for BMW
The new iX3 isn’t just another electric update; it’s the first production model built entirely on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, a clean-sheet platform designed exclusively for electric vehicles. BMW Group Indonesia’s leadership called the launch a milestone moment, describing it as the start of a completely new generation for the brand. Rather than being a modified version of the existing X3, this iX3 has been engineered from the ground up to maximize efficiency, range, and digital experience.
Power and Performance
Under the skin, the iX3 50 xDrive uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology paired with an 800-volt electrical architecture. The setup pairs two electric motors: a rear-mounted Electrically Excited Synchronous Motor and a compact front-mounted Asynchronous Motor for a combined output of 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque. That’s enough for a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h, figures that place it firmly among performance-oriented luxury EVs.
Range is where the Neue Klasse platform really shines. A new high-voltage battery with cylindrical cells and a capacity of around 108.7 kWh delivers up to 805 km on the WLTP cycle. Thanks to 800V fast-charging support at up to 400 kW, the iX3 can add roughly 372 km of range in just 10 minutes, while a 10-80% charge takes about 21 minutes. Safety credentials are equally strong, with the iX3 earning a five-star Euro NCAP rating under the tougher 2026 testing standards.
Design and Technology
Visually, the iX3 introduces BMW’s next design language, featuring a reworked kidney grille, a sleeker silhouette, and a cabin built around a large curved display that spans beneath the windscreen alongside a substantial central touchscreen. Buyers will also be able to option the M Sport package, along with BMW’s Iconic Glow lighting feature that adds customizable ambient light sequences.
What This Means for India
While the Indonesian launch price sits around Rp 2.2 billion (roughly ₹1.1 crore), Indian pricing is expected to be considerably more competitive once local assembly kicks in. Reports suggest the iX3 will be manufactured at BMW’s plant near Chennai, with an estimated India launch window of early 2027 and bookings likely opening in late 2026. Expected pricing in India ranges between ₹65 lakh and ₹90 lakh, depending on variant, positioning it directly against the Mercedes-Benz GLC EV and the Audi Q6 e-tron.
The Road Ahead
With more than 40 new or updated models planned globally through 2027 under the Neue Klasse strategy, the iX3 is just the opening chapter for BMW’s electric future. For Indian buyers who’ve been waiting for a genuinely next-generation electric SUV from the brand, the wait now has a real shape. Based on what debuted in Indonesia, it looks worth it.
