Kia has once again grabbed attention after the next-generation Seltos was spotted undergoing high-altitude testing in the European Alps. While the SUV remains heavily camouflaged, the latest spy shots suggest that Kia is preparing a significant update for one of its best-selling global SUVs. The biggest talking point, however, is the possibility of a hybrid powertrain joining the Seltos lineup for the first time.
The Alps are often used by automakers to test new vehicles in demanding weather and road conditions. Testing at high altitudes helps manufacturers evaluate engine performance, battery efficiency, braking, suspension, and cooling systems before a vehicle enters production. Seeing the Seltos in this environment indicates that Kia is in the advanced stages of development.
Although the camouflage hides most design details, a few styling changes are visible. The upcoming Seltos is expected to feature a more upright front fascia, redesigned LED headlamps, a wider grille, and a new bumper design. At the rear, updated LED tail lamps connected by a light bar and a revised tailgate could give the SUV a more premium appearance. New alloy wheel designs are also likely to be offered.
The biggest highlight of the latest test mule is the strong possibility of a hybrid powertrain. Industry reports suggest Kia may introduce a self-charging hybrid system similar to the one used in several Hyundai and Kia global models. This move would help the brand meet stricter emission regulations while offering customers improved fuel efficiency without the need for external charging.
If launched, the hybrid Seltos could appeal to buyers looking for better mileage than conventional petrol models while avoiding the higher price and charging concerns associated with electric vehicles. It would also strengthen Kia’s position against hybrid SUVs expected from rival brands in the coming years.
Apart from the new powertrain, the cabin is expected to receive a major upgrade. The next-generation model could feature a larger connected dual-screen setup, an updated infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a redesigned dashboard, premium upholstery, and improved material quality. Kia may also introduce new connected car features and over-the-air software updates.
Safety is likely to be another area of improvement. The new Seltos is expected to offer an expanded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) package with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. A 360-degree camera and additional airbags are also expected on higher variants.
For India, Kia is likely to continue offering petrol and turbo-petrol engine options alongside the possible hybrid variant. While there is no official confirmation regarding the launch timeline, reports indicate the global debut could take place in 2027, followed by an India launch shortly after.
With refreshed styling, modern technology, improved safety, and the possibility of an efficient hybrid powertrain, the next-generation Kia Seltos is shaping up to be a major evolution rather than a simple facelift. As testing continues, more details are expected to emerge in the coming months, making it one of the most anticipated SUV launches in Kia’s future lineup.
