The Mahindra Thar has always been known for its rugged design and strong off-road character, but the latest Thar OG takes the three-door SUV considerably further. Launched in September 2026, the Thar OG brings changes to its platform, suspension, steering, powertrains, safety equipment, and cabin, while retaining the familiar boxy silhouette that has made the Thar popular in India.
Here are the 10 biggest changes over the previous Thar.
1. New M_Glyde 4G Platform
The Thar OG moves to Mahindra’s M_Glyde 4G platform, which was first introduced with the Thar Roxx. Mahindra says the new architecture offers greater structural stiffness compared with the outgoing model.
2. Revised Rear Suspension
The rear suspension has been significantly upgraded. The Thar OG gets a Penta-link setup with a Watts Link, replacing the previous arrangement. It is paired with frequency-dependent damping technology that Mahindra calls DAVINCI dampers.
3. Electric Power Steering
Another major mechanical change is the move from hydraulic to electric power steering. This should make low-speed manoeuvring and parking easier, particularly in urban conditions.
4. More Powerful Petrol and Diesel Engines
The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol now produces around 162hp and 330Nm, while the 2.2-litre diesel develops 152hp and 330Nm. The 1.5-litre diesel continues with its existing output.
5. Electronic Locking Differential
The Thar OG replaces the previous mechanical locking differential with an electronic locking differential on 4WD variants. It also introduces dedicated Mud, Sand and Snow terrain modes for different off-road conditions.
6. Higher Ground Clearance and Wider Track
Ground clearance has increased from 226mm to 232mm, while the track has become 60mm wider. These changes are aimed at improving the SUV’s stance, stability, and ability to tackle uneven terrain.
7. Updated Exterior Styling
The overall Thar shape remains familiar, but the OG gets a redesigned grille, C-shaped LED DRLs, LED headlamps, LED fog lamps with a cornering function, and revised bumpers. The top-spec ZXT also gets larger 19-inch alloy wheels.
8. More Cabin Features
The cabin retains the familiar dashboard layout, but gains features such as wireless charging, a rear USB Type-C port, push-button start, rear armrests with cupholders, and upgraded leatherette upholstery on higher variants.
9. Improved Safety Equipment
Safety has also received attention. Depending on the variant, the Thar OG gets six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, front parking sensors, ESP with rollover mitigation and a rear-view camera.
10. New Trim Structure
The Thar OG is available in AXT, LXT and ZXT trims, giving buyers more configuration choices across engines, transmissions and drivetrains. Prices start at Rs 10.32 lakh and go up to Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
Overall, the Thar OG is more than a cosmetic update. Mahindra has worked on the SUV’s underlying platform, suspension and steering while adding more power, technology, safety equipment and convenience features. At the same time, its recognisable three-door design and off-road-focused character remain central to the package.
