Mahindra has just filed design patents for the Vision X, and the timing couldn’t be more interesting. This is the SUV widely expected to sit above the current XUV 3XO in Mahindra’s lineup, and the patent images finally give us a production-accurate preview of what buyers will see in showrooms around 2027.
From Concept to Reality
The Vision X first appeared as a concept in August 2025, alongside three other Vision-series SUVs unveiled at Mahindra’s Freedom NU event in Mumbai. Of the four, the Vision X always felt like the most “production-ready.” It wasn’t chasing wild, unrealistic proportions the way some concept cars do. The good news for fans of that original design is simple: the patent filing shows Mahindra hasn’t watered it down. The coupe-like silhouette, the sporty stance, and the overall attitude of the concept have carried through largely intact.
What Makes the Design Stand Out
Where most sub-4-metre SUVs in India lean toward a boxy, upright look, the XUV 3XO, including the Vision X, takes a different route. The patent drawings reveal a tapering roofline, muscular flared haunches at the rear, and a coupe-inspired stance that gives it real visual distinction in a crowded segment. It’s a shape built to appeal to buyers who want something that feels premium and stylish, without sacrificing the road presence that makes small SUVs popular in the first place.
The design work itself was a joint effort between Mahindra’s India Design Studio in Mumbai and its Advanced Design arm in the UK, the same combination behind the earlier concept. That collaboration seems to be paying off, since the result doesn’t resemble anything else currently on sale in this segment.
Underneath: The NU_IQ Platform
Mechanically, the Vision X will be the smallest SUV built on Mahindra’s new NU_IQ platform, a modular architecture designed to support multiple body styles and powertrains. Reports suggest the Vision X will be offered in both fully electric and petrol forms, giving Mahindra flexibility to target different buyer segments with essentially the same underlying design.
A Cabin Borrowed from Mahindra’s EV Flagship
Perhaps the most interesting detail isn’t exterior at all, it’s what’s expected inside. Several cues appear to be lifted directly from the BE 6, one of Mahindra’s flagship electric vehicles. Think a wide dual-screen setup spanning the driver’s display and infotainment, along with a steering wheel design shared with the BE concept lineup. For a vehicle expected to be priced under roughly Rs 16 lakh, that’s an ambitious promise. If it holds up in the production car, Mahindra would be offering a cabin experience well ahead of most rivals at this price point, and it would explain why the company appears comfortable pricing the Vision X above even fully loaded versions of the XUV 3XO.
What This Means for Buyers
For now, the patent filing is the clearest signal yet that Mahindra is serious about carving out space above the XUV 3XO rather than simply replacing it. Expect more details, including powertrain specifics and pricing, to trickle out as the Vision X inches closer to its 2027 launch window. Until then, this patent gives enthusiasts plenty to look forward to.
