Tata Motors has officially launched the new Osprey compact SUV in South Africa, bringing the popular Tata Nexon to the market under a new name. The Osprey is the fifth passenger vehicle in Tata’s current South African range and is positioned between the smaller Punch and the larger Curvv. The SUV has been launched with a starting price of R249,900.
For Indian buyers, the Tata Osprey will look very familiar because it is essentially the South African version of the Tata Nexon. Tata says the Osprey name has been chosen to reflect the bird’s strength, versatility and adventurous character, which the company believes suits the South African market.
In terms of dimensions, the Osprey measures 3,995mm in length and gets a ground clearance of 208mm. It offers around 381-382 litres of boot space, making it suitable for everyday city use as well as longer weekend trips. The SUV also has a compact footprint, which should make it easier to drive and park in urban areas.
Under the bonnet, the South African-spec Tata Osprey is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It produces 88.2kW, or around 120 PS, and 170 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a five-speed manual gearbox and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The manual is offered with the entry-level Smart+ variant, while the higher variants get the DCA automatic.
The Osprey is available in four variants: Smart+ MT, Smart+ DCA, Creative DCA and Creative+ PS DCA. Prices range from R249,900 to R329,900, with the top-spec version receiving a more premium equipment list.
Feature highlights include LED lighting, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument display, cruise control, a 360-degree camera and a blind-view monitor. The top variant also gets a panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone connectivity, wireless charging and keyless entry.
Safety is another strong point, with six airbags, ABS, electronic stability control, LED daytime running lights and rear parking sensors offered across the range. Tata is also highlighting the Nexon’s five-star safety credentials in its South African launch communication.
With competitive pricing, a turbo-petrol engine and a strong feature list, the Tata Osprey gives the brand an important entry into South Africa’s highly competitive compact SUV segment.
