India’s sub-4-metre SUV segment is heading for another major shake-up, with several new models and next-generation products expected to arrive by 2027. The category has become increasingly important for carmakers because it combines SUV styling, compact dimensions and relatively accessible pricing.
From the next-generation Kia Sonet to Tata’s all-new Nexon, the upcoming models are expected to bring stronger safety, more technology and, in some cases, electrified powertrains. Here are six confirmed upcoming sub-4-metre SUVs that buyers should watch out for.
Next-Generation Kia Sonet
Kia is already testing the second-generation Sonet in India, with its launch expected in the first half of 2027. The new Sonet will reportedly be wider and more spacious than the current model and will move to the K1 platform, which also underpins the Hyundai Venue and Kia Syros.
The cabin is expected to receive a significant technology upgrade, including twin 12.3-inch curved displays and improved Level 2 ADAS. The existing petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel engines are expected to continue. Kia has also confirmed that a strong-hybrid version will arrive at a later stage.
Volkswagen Compact SUV
Volkswagen is finally preparing to enter India’s sub-4-metre SUV segment with a new compact SUV in 2027. The model will share its architecture with the Skoda Kylaq but is expected to receive Volkswagen-specific styling and interior changes.
Power is expected to come from the familiar 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine producing around 115hp. An automatic transmission is also expected, making it a direct rival to established models such as the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
Renault Bridger
Renault’s upcoming Bridger-based SUV is another important addition to the segment. The production model is expected in the first half of 2027 and will use the RGMP platform related to the Renault Duster.
The SUV is expected to feature a rugged, boxy design with a lifestyle-oriented character. A new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine is expected, with both manual and automatic transmission options. Renault could also introduce hybrid and electric derivatives in the future.
Mahindra Vision S
Mahindra’s Vision S is expected to bring a more rugged character to the sub-4-metre class. The production version is currently being tested and could be revealed at the 2027 Bharat Mobility Global Expo.
It will debut Mahindra’s NU-IQ modular platform and is expected to feature a boxy design, panoramic sunroof and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. The platform is designed to support multiple powertrains, including petrol, hybrid and electric options.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx Facelift
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is also due for a mid-life update by March 2027. Along with styling and interior revisions, the facelift could introduce additional features and potentially Suzuki’s new series-hybrid technology.
The reported hybrid setup could combine a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a battery and electric motor. If introduced, the system could push fuel efficiency beyond 35kmpl, making the Fronx even more attractive to urban buyers.
Next-Generation Tata Nexon
Tata Motors is also preparing the next-generation Nexon for launch by 2027. The new SUV is expected to use a significantly upgraded version of the existing platform and will receive an all-new exterior and revised interior.
The next Nexon is also expected to offer improvements to both its ICE and electric versions, keeping Tata competitive in one of India’s most crowded SUV segments.
With six major models arriving or receiving substantial updates, the sub-4-metre SUV market could become even more competitive by 2027. Buyers can expect more advanced features, improved safety and greater choice between petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains. For customers planning to buy a compact SUV in the next couple of years, waiting for these new launches could be worth considering.
