VinFast is preparing to expand its electric vehicle portfolio in India, and its largest model, the VF 9, could be the next major addition. The three-row electric SUV has recently been patented in India, strengthening speculation that the Vietnamese automaker is evaluating it for the Indian market. However, VinFast has not yet announced an official launch date.
The VF 9 sits above the VF 7 in VinFast’s global lineup and is positioned as a premium full-size electric SUV. Measuring around five metres in length, it offers a three-row cabin with six- and seven-seat configurations, making it considerably larger than the VF 7 currently sold in India.
One of the biggest highlights of the VF 9 is its electric powertrain. International versions use a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing around 402bhp and 620Nm. The SUV is equipped with a large 123kWh battery pack, while the claimed range can reach up to 626km depending on the specification and testing cycle.
The large battery should make the VF 9 suitable for long-distance travel, while its fast-charging capability could further improve practicality. The model supports both AC and DC charging, with the latter capable of charging the battery from 10 to 70 per cent in around 35 minutes under the specified conditions.
Inside, the VF 9 follows a premium approach with features such as a large 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, vegan leather upholstery and an Alexa-powered voice assistant. Safety and driver assistance equipment is also expected to be a major part of its package, including Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera and multiple airbags.
VinFast has already established its presence in India with models including the VF 6 and VF 7, while the company is also expanding its local assembly and supplier network. Recent reports indicate that VinFast continues to remain committed to India and plans to increase localisation at its Tamil Nadu facility.
If introduced here, the VF 9 could occupy a premium electric SUV space with limited direct competition. Its three-row layout, large battery and powerful dual-motor setup could appeal to buyers looking for a luxury EV with family-friendly practicality.
For now, the VF 9’s Indian launch remains unconfirmed. However, its latest Indian patent filing suggests that VinFast is at least keeping the flagship SUV under consideration. More details on pricing, variants, and launch timing are expected if the company decides to bring the model to India.
