VinFast VF5 India: New EV to Rival Tata Punch EV

VinFast is preparing to strengthen its presence in India’s affordable electric vehicle market with the VF5, a compact electric SUV that has recently been spotted testing on Indian roads. The upcoming model is expected to take on popular electric cars such as the Tata Punch EV and could become one of the most important products in VinFast’s India strategy.

The latest test mule was spotted in Bengaluru and appears to be a new-generation version of the VF5. The heavily camouflaged vehicle features a compact SUV-like profile, revised styling and updated exterior details compared with the model currently sold in international markets. While VinFast has not officially confirmed the Indian launch date, reports suggest that the company is working towards expanding its lineup with more affordable EVs.

Compact SUV Dimensions

The VinFast VF5 measures 3,967mm in length, 1,723mm in width and around 1,579mm in height. It has a 2,514mm wheelbase and approximately 160mm of ground clearance. These dimensions put it firmly in the sub-4-metre category and make it a direct fit for India’s compact electric SUV market.

The VF5 is slightly longer than the Tata Punch EV and offers a relatively long wheelbase for its size. It also has a 260-litre boot, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats.

Battery, Range and Performance

Internationally, the VF5 has been offered with different battery and motor configurations depending on the market. One version uses a 29.6kWh battery with a 95hp electric motor, while another gets a larger 37.23kWh battery paired with a 136hp motor. Claimed NEDC range figures are up to 268km and 326km respectively.

However, these figures should not be treated as final India-spec specifications. VinFast is yet to confirm which battery, motor and charging configuration will be offered here.

Features and Cabin

The global VF5 gets a relatively simple but modern cabin with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. Other features include a PM2.5 air filter, USB ports, keyless entry and leatherette upholstery, depending on the market and variant.

Safety equipment on international versions includes ABS, EBD, electronic stability control, and airbags, although the exact India-spec safety package has yet to be announced.

Expected Price and Competition

The VF5 could be positioned around the ₹10 lakh–₹12 lakh range if VinFast manages to localise production and components effectively. This would place it directly in the territory of the Tata Punch EV, although the final price will depend on the battery size, equipment and localisation level.

VinFast VF5 India: New EV to Rival Tata Punch EV

VinFast already manufactures EVs in Tamil Nadu, allowing it to leverage local production to make its upcoming smaller models more competitive.

The VF5 could therefore be a significant product for VinFast in India. If it combines competitive pricing, practical range, modern features and strong localisation, it could give buyers a serious alternative to the Tata Punch EV and other compact electric SUVs. For now, the launch timeline, India-specific specifications and pricing remain awaited.
