BMW has officially launched the new i5 Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India, expanding its electric vehicle lineup with a luxury sedan focused on long range, rear-seat comfort, and premium technology. The BMW i5 LWB is priced at Rs 79.60 lakh (ex-showroom) and is locally assembled at BMW Group’s Chennai plant. Deliveries have already started across India.
The biggest highlight of the new BMW i5 LWB is its 81.6kWh battery pack. The electric sedan offers a claimed range of up to 669km on the MIDC cycle, making it one of the more practical luxury EVs for long-distance driving. The car uses a rear-mounted electric motor producing around 268hp and 410Nm of torque, with power sent to the rear wheels.
Despite its focus on comfort, the i5 LWB offers strong performance. BMW claims a 0- 100 km/h acceleration time of 6.7 seconds, while the top speed is rated at 195 km/h. The sedan also supports DC fast charging at up to 160kW, with the battery capable of charging from 10 to 80 percent in around 33 minutes under suitable conditions.
The long-wheelbase format is another major attraction for Indian buyers. The BMW i5 LWB measures 5,175mm in length and gets a 3,105mm wheelbase, creating a spacious cabin with a strong focus on rear passenger comfort. Adaptive rear-axle air suspension is offered as standard, while BMW has also increased the ground clearance to suit Indian road conditions better.
Inside, the i5 LWB offers a premium cabin with BMW’s Curved Display, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central touchscreen. Other highlights include four-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting and wireless charging. The cabin also uses vegan Veganza upholstery, giving the sedan a more modern and sustainable feel.
BMW is offering the i5 LWB in the eDrive35L M Sport configuration, while a limited First Edition was also introduced. Only 99 First Edition units were offered, and BMW says they were sold out before the official launch. Both versions were priced at Rs 79.60 lakh (ex-showroom).
With its combination of a 669km claimed range, large battery, spacious rear cabin and locally assembled production, the BMW i5 LWB brings a different proposition to India’s growing luxury EV market. It will appeal particularly to buyers who want an executive sedan experience without moving away from electric power.
