Renault is preparing to expand its SUV portfolio in India with a stronger focus on hybrid technology. The company’s upcoming lineup is expected to include the Duster Hybrid, a larger three-row SUV, and eventually a compact SUV that could also be offered with electrified powertrains. This strategy comes as hybrid SUVs gain attention among Indian buyers looking for better fuel efficiency without depending entirely on charging infrastructure.
Renault Duster Hybrid to Arrive This Diwali
The biggest upcoming hybrid launch from Renault will be the new Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160. Renault has officially confirmed that the hybrid version will be available around Diwali 2026, following the launch of the petrol-powered Duster earlier this year.
The Duster Hybrid will use a 1.8-litre petrol engine combined with a 1.4kWh battery pack and an electric motor setup. Renault says the system is designed to operate in electric mode for a significant portion of everyday driving, helping improve efficiency in urban conditions.
The hybrid powertrain is expected to produce around 160hp, putting the Duster in direct competition with strong-hybrid SUVs such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The combination of petrol power and electric assistance should also provide smoother performance in stop-and-go traffic.
Larger 7-Seater SUV Also Planned
Renault is also working on a larger SUV positioned above the Duster. The three-row model is expected to share its platform and several mechanical components with the Duster while offering additional cabin space and seating for up to seven passengers.
The upcoming SUV could draw design inspiration from Renault’s global Boreal or Bigster models. Its final name for India has not yet been confirmed, but the model is expected to become an important part of Renault’s push into the family SUV segment.
A hybrid powertrain is also expected to be part of Renault’s plans for the larger SUV, although specific specifications and launch details have not been officially confirmed.
More Hybrid Models Could Follow
Renault’s electrification strategy may extend further into the compact SUV segment. The company is reportedly developing a sub-4-metre SUV for India, with petrol, hybrid, CNG and electric powertrains being considered. The model is currently expected around 2027-28.
With the Duster Hybrid arriving first, Renault could establish a wider hybrid SUV portfolio over the next few years. If priced competitively, these models could give the French automaker a stronger presence in India’s rapidly growing SUV and electrified vehicle market.
