The 2026 Honda City e:HEV has been designed to offer strong fuel efficiency without changing the familiar driving experience of a petrol sedan. While Honda claims an ARAI-certified mileage of 27.26kmpl, a recent real-world test has now provided a clearer picture of what buyers can expect in everyday driving conditions.
The City Hybrid is currently available only in the top-spec ZX Plus variant and is priced at Rs. 21.35 lakh (ex-showroom). It uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, an e-CVT transmission, two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. The hybrid system automatically decides when to use electric power, the petrol engine or a combination of both.
Honda City Hybrid Real-World Mileage Test
In the latest test, the City e:HEV was driven in both urban and highway conditions. The test car weighed 1,310kg, while the air conditioning was set to 22 degrees Celsius with the fan at speed two. Front-seat ventilation was also used at its highest setting.
| Test condition | Distance | Fuel consumed | Real-world mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| City | 78.3km | 3.10 litres | 25.25kmpl |
| Highway | 80.2km | 3.31 litres | 24.22kmpl |
| Overall | 158.5km | 6.41 litres | 24kmpl |
The City Hybrid returned 25.25kmpl in urban driving and 24.22kmpl on the highway, resulting in an overall tested efficiency of around 24kmpl. The MID displayed approximately 25kmpl during the city run.
Interestingly, the latest test shows that the sedan can deliver strong efficiency even with the air conditioning and seat ventilation being used. This highlights the advantage of its hybrid system, particularly in traffic where the electric motor can take over propulsion and regenerative braking can recover energy.
How the Hybrid System Works
The City e:HEV can switch between electric propulsion, hybrid operation, and direct engine drive depending on the driving situation and battery charge. At lower speeds and during suitable conditions, the car can run on electric power, while the petrol engine can also generate electricity when required. These transitions happen automatically without requiring the driver to select a particular mode.
Previous independent testing of the earlier City Hybrid recorded 19.8kmpl in the city and 22.5kmpl on the highway, while a separate controlled hypermiling run achieved 34.59kmpl over 1,006km. These figures show how strongly driving conditions and driving style can influence hybrid fuel efficiency.
For everyday buyers, the latest 24kmpl overall real-world figure makes the Honda City e:HEV one of the more fuel-efficient petrol-powered sedans available in India, although actual mileage will vary with traffic, speed, climate and driving habits.
