Hyundai Boulder Receives Patent in India: What We Know

Hyundai has taken an interesting step in the Indian SUV market by filing a design patent for its rugged Boulder SUV. The model was first showcased globally at the 2026 New York International Auto Show and has now appeared in India through a patent filing. While this does not confirm an India launch, it has certainly raised expectations around Hyundai’s plans for a proper off-road SUV.

Hyundai Boulder Gets a Rugged Design

The Hyundai Boulder is very different from the company’s current SUV range. Instead of the familiar crossover design seen on models such as the Creta and Tucson, the Boulder features a boxy silhouette, upright stance, wide fenders and chunky off-road tyres.

The Indian patent images also reveal some changes compared with the original concept. The production-oriented design appears to feature smaller square-shaped headlamps with vertical LED elements, along with a redesigned front bumper and skid plate. The overall shape, squared-off wheel arches and muscular body cladding have largely been retained.

First Hyundai SUV With Body-on-Frame Architecture

One of the biggest highlights of the Boulder is its expected body-on-frame construction. Hyundai has traditionally focused on monocoque SUVs, but the Boulder represents a significant move towards a more rugged platform designed for demanding off-road conditions.

Hyundai has described the Boulder concept as an SUV-shaped preview of its future body-on-frame architecture. The same underlying platform is also linked to Hyundai’s plans for a midsize pickup truck for the US market.

A body-on-frame setup could give the SUV the structural strength and off-road capability needed to compete in the lifestyle 4×4 segment. If Hyundai eventually brings it to India, the Boulder could enter a market currently dominated by rugged SUVs such as the Mahindra Thar Roxx, Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny.

EV and ICE Powertrain Possibilities

Hyundai has not yet revealed the final powertrain specifications of the Boulder. However, reports indicate that the new architecture is being developed with multiple powertrain possibilities in mind, including internal-combustion and electric setups.

The original concept was designed around a modern off-road theme and featured hardware and controls intended for adventure-focused driving. A 4×4 system is expected to be an important part of the vehicle’s character if it reaches production.

India Launch Still Not Confirmed

The patent is an important development, but it should not be mistaken for an official launch announcement. Hyundai has not confirmed that the Boulder will be sold in India or that the production SUV will retain the Boulder name.

However, Hyundai had previously outlined plans to introduce an off-road-focused SUV in India before FY2030. The new patent therefore adds weight to speculation that the company is seriously considering a rugged SUV for the Indian market.

For now, the Hyundai Boulder remains an interesting possibility rather than a confirmed upcoming India launch. If Hyundai decides to bring a production version here, its rugged styling, potential 4×4 capability and new body-on-frame architecture could give the brand a strong entry into India’s growing lifestyle SUV segment.
